The topic of sustainability has been on the agenda of the German National Committee of the Lutheran World Federation (GNC/LWF) for years. We are committed to the careful use of resources such as raw materials, energy and human labor.
The following concrete measures are already being implemented:
- Sustainable and climate-neutral travel
- Sustainable management of the office
- Conducting analog meetings in a way that conserves resources
- Expansion of digital meeting formats
- Sustainable investments
- Further sensitization of employees to sustainability issues
Detailed information on updating the sustainability process in the GNC/LWF and the individual measures can be found here.
The Lutheran World Federation (LWF) supports various projects worldwide on the topic of ecological sustainability. For decades, the LWF has been committed to a theological examination of the issues of climate justice and the integrity of creation and to advocacy work in these areas.
The LWF sees the preservation of creation as its most important calling and considers climate change to be an issue of justice and human rights. The LWF's advocacy work for climate justice sees its main task as protecting the most vulnerable communities from the effects of climate change and holding governments accountable to their commitments in areas such as climate action, intergenerational justice and interfaith cooperation.
Since the 1970s, the LWF has been raising its voice on the environmental and climate crisis through resolutions, statements and actions.
In line with the call to work for climate justice, the member churches and the World Service country programs have carried out concrete climate protection actions within the community. For example, a project in South Africa was supported in which pupils at Hermannsburg School planted eco-gardens, which they look after together. The fruit and vegetables harvested are processed in the school canteen and some are distributed to people in the local communities.
