Around 18.6 million people in Germany are Protestant. More than half of them are Evangelical Lutheran Christians and members of a church that stands in the tradition of Martin Luther and the Reformation he shaped 500 years ago.
The Lutheran World Federation (LWF) has been connecting such Lutheran churches worldwide since 1947. Today, 150 churches with over 78 million members in 99 countries belong to it. They form the Communion of Churches of the LWF, the largest association of Lutheran churches worldwide.
Eleven churches from Germany with around 10.3 million members are part of the LWF. They form the German part of the Lutheran World Communion and the German National Committee of the Lutheran World Federation (GNC/LWF).
Our organization has its headquarters in Hanover. From here we coordinate the work of the German member churches in the LWF and support the LWF in its theological, missionary and diaconal work.
In addition, as GNC/LWF we support aid programs around the world and award scholarships for study and research stays in theology and church-related subjects.
